The Power of Music: m4dRADIO Featured on BBC Radio London
BBC Radio London visited Drayton Village Care Home to discover how m4dRADIO is helping people living with dementia reconnect with memories, enjoy familiar music and share meaningful moments with others.
As part of World Alzheimer's Month, BBC Radio London featured the launch of m4dRADIO across South and West London, shining a spotlight on the powerful role music can play in the lives of people living with dementia.
BBC reporter Nisha Patel visited Drayton Village Care Home, where residents and staff shared their experiences of using music to spark memories, lift spirits and bring people together.
During the feature, residents spoke warmly about the songs and artists that hold special meaning for them, from Elvis Presley and the music of the 1960s to the unmistakable voice of Luciano Pavarotti.
One resident described how hearing a familiar song could transport him back to a particular place or moment in his life, while another shared the simple joy that music continues to bring him.
The report also featured Music for Dementia's Chief Executive, Amy Shackleton, who explained how m4dRADIO has been designed to make meaningful music easily accessible, without the need for apps, downloads or passwords.
With dedicated decade channels spanning the 1940s to the 1980s, alongside a MIX channel and specialist programmes including Move It Mondays and Feel Good Fridays, m4dRADIO makes it easier for people living with dementia, their families and carers to find music that matters to them.
The feature offered a wonderful reminder that music is so much more than entertainment. It can unlock memories, encourage conversation, strengthen connections and bring moments of happiness to everyday life.
