m4dRADIO hits the London airwaves as Music for Dementia celebrates DAB launch

It’s official: m4dRADIO is now broadcasting on DAB across South and West London, making our free music service for people living with dementia even easier to access.

We marked the launch with two days of music and celebration, joined by Music for Dementia ambassador Tony Christie, our friends at Dementia Disco, and people living with dementia, families, carers and care teams across London.

A very special switch-on

The celebrations began on Sunday 13 September at Dementia Disco in Merton, where more than 100 people living with dementia, family members and carers came together for an afternoon of music and dancing.

There was also a special surprise for everyone…

Music legend and Music for Dementia ambassador Tony Christie, who is living with dementia, joined the party with his wife Sue, even taking to the floor for an impromptu rendition of (Is This The Way To) Amarillo?

It wasn’t long before the room was singing, clapping and dancing along.

For Tony, the afternoon was a reminder of just how naturally music can bring people together.

“Music has been my whole life, so to come somewhere like this and see people getting up, dancing, singing and enjoying themselves is fantastic.

“You can see straight away what music does. It brings people together and it brings memories back. You don't have to explain it, you just put a great song on and suddenly everyone's smiling, people start clapping and toes start tapping.”

The afternoon also marked the start of a new chapter for m4dRADIO, as the service begins broadcasting its Mix channel live on DAB for the first time across South and West London.
